There is no need for you to take much clothing as it can be obtained very cheaply in Kathmandu and Gorkha. However we do request that no shorts are worn and that the men wear shirts. Women can wear trousers or long skirts, and cover up shoulders – short sleeves are sufficient. This applies to Gorkha, of course, but this also means that you will gain more respect even in the towns. If you are going from November to March, you will need to wear woolen jumpers etc. Which are warm and cheap to buy (about £10 for best quality heavyweight sweater) Layers are useful at this time of year as it can be warm during the day. At other times of the year you can buy rainwear easily too. Next, upper site mountain area of Gorkha mostly the cold some time snowing. Therefore, if you are going to travel upper site should take warm clothes.
  12. Traditions to observe
If you are eating the Nepali way, use your right hand. When invited to eat with a traditional family, you will be served first, and if you find they are not eating with you, then you will take your leave after you have had your food in order that they can eat their own.. Generally, however, you will be with people who follow our customs. Always rinse your hands before eating if possible. When you are giving or receiving gifts, please use your right hand, or more correctly, both hands. Don’t think the Nepali is unappreciative if they do not open your gifts, or do not thank you. Verbal thanks are only given if you have done them a great favor – like saving a life!!! People we know usually adopt our habit, when they remember. They don’t open gifts because it shows bad manners to seem too eager, and also it would be unkind to anyone else there who is not receiving a gift. Do not touch anyone on the head or shoulders, as that is the dwelling-place of their god. Use the greeting Namaste for both hello and good-bye. It means “I worship the god within you” Most Nepalese are not demonstrative and have no habit of kissing anyone in public, and can be embarrassed by any overt hugging etc. even of the same sex. Some of our friends have picked up the habit from us, and they may be happy with this when they know you well. Always remove footwear before entering a house, or the living rooms. The Nepalese are very polite and considerate themselves, and will never be offended if you commit a faux pas. They also have a keen sense of humor, so you can always share a joke.
  13. Visas can be obtained from your nearest Nepalese Embassy, or can be obtained at Kathmandu Airport on arrival. Trekking permits can be obtained while you are there. We deal with a small travel Agency near the Thamel Area.
  14. Please log in to http://www.gorkhavisit.com at intervals to obtain news of the political Situation in Nepal. We advise that you take such trips with Nepali guides or representative in Gorkha. You will be advised re safest areas. Do not go trekking by yourselves in any area. That you would be quite safe in the town of Gorkha at the moment, they will look after your interests at all times. As a precaution during your stay in Nepal, Mention that you will be based in the town of Gorkha, not the region (zone or state) as this could mean far away areas which are prone to attack. Villages close to Gorkha should be safe with our Nepali escorts. So far none of our volunteers has felt threatened in any way, but we feel you should be aware of the situation. I will inform you of any change regarding Gorkha before you go. Good luck! I hope you find your visit as fulfilling and enjoyable as all our other visitors have done in the past.
